There are no indications President Barack Obama's USC visit on Friday will impede traffic in the Downtown area. However, that afternoon a protest march originating at Pershing Square, and a half marathon on Sunday ending at L.A. Live, will create road closures to be aware of.
Tomorrow at 2pm, Pershing Square will be a gathering point for a march to McArthur Park as part of the "National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality," with similar events taking place in other cities.
Associated road closures will begin around 2:30pm along 5th Street to the 110, and on 6th Street all the way to Westlake. Downtown, vehicle crossing points will be maintained at Figueroa and Flower. Roads should reopen prior to 5pm, when a rally is scheduled to take place in McArthur Park.
Speakers at the rally include Mashia Lewis, the mother of James Davis, who was shot and killed by police during a foot chase in Watts last week, and family members of Manuel Jaminez, a day laborer whose shooting death by the LAPD caused unrest in the Westlake area early last month.
On Sunday morning, L.A.'s first Rock ‘n’ Roll 1/2 Marathon will start in Griffith Park and end at L.A. Live.
Runners will be entertained along the route with a new band performing along every mile, and a free post-race concert by the Neon Trees that is open to the public.
Spectators along the course can also enjoy the live music. Rock bands Acidic and 4th will play at the Pay Lot at 201 S. Beaudry. Neverwonder, a pop soul band, performs at 7th and Figueroa. On the corner of 5th and Flower, at the LA Public Library Complex, Hypnotically Enhanced will play funk with classic southern rockers the Retrorockit Band; and at 9th and Hill, Kelly's Lot will cover upbeat blues while Groove Bazaar reimagines 70's funk.
Beginning at 8am, the following Downtown streets will be closed to traffic to accomodate the final miles of the race and finish line activities:
Temple from Edgeware to Beaudry ; Beaudry from Temple to 4th; 4th from Beaudry to S Flower; and S Flower from 4th to 9th will all be closed until 12:15pm. 9th from S Flower to Hill and S Hill From 9th to 11th will be closed until 12:45pm.
From 3am until 3pm, the following are closed: 11th from Hill to Georgia; and both Figueroa and Flower from Olympic to 12th.
Thanks Blogdowtown for the info.
