Angeleno Archetypes

Four L.A. locales that scream the spring 2011 collections.

Fashion fare at the New York shows always remind us of L.A. Not just because Rodarte tend to steal the spotlight; however exquisite their work is, it doesn't scream Pasadena.
So perhaps this is just our own west coast bias, and not indicative of a designer looking to Los Angeles for inspiration. But it's hard not to see a little 323 on the runway. Here's what we saw, what we loved and where we picture it.

Marc Jacobs
What it screams: Laurel Canyon. Jacobs' was in a 70s state of mind for spring, in stark contrast to a muted fall collection and a 80s-infused neon mood the previous spring. We hear Joni Mitchell, pre-smoking damage to her soprano voice, permeating a poolside 1973 party at sunset.
Why we love it: So over 80s references.
Who should wear it: Mischa Barton if she can get her act together.

Proenza Schouler
What it screams: A fresher way to dress with opulence for the young rich of Beverly Hills. PS's collection had heavy influence on Chanel; accessories aside, no 23-year-old girl who can afford it should be clad cardigan tweed jackets more than a few days out of the year.
Why we love it: Proenza's take was beautiful and stately without swerving into a matronly look.
Who should wear it: Anna Paquin. Anna Paquin. And Anna Paquin. She stole our hearts by wearing McQueen on the red carpet for the Emmys. Proenza would look divine on her.

Ralph Lauren
What it screams: Equestrian-chic in Malibu. While at a True Religion shoot at a horse stable near Malibu Canyon a few years ago, we saw a young gal wearing basically this outfit, with riding boots in place of heels.
Why we love it: Suede fringe. What's not to love? A stylist friend of ours was worried recently that a fringe bag she recently acquired and adored would soon be out of style. If anyone takes Ralph's lead, that's not likely to happen.
Who should wear it: We're thinking Kate Winslet needs a western moment. Barring that, Cate Blanchett.

 Jeremy Laing
What it screams: Fashion district. There's always one worker bee looking beyond amazing somewhere in proximity to the Cooper Bldg. or the New Mart. We expect to see this on some lucky gal in the coming months.
Why we like it: Jessica Trent has an eye for interesting lines and turned us onto this label a few months ago. You can find Laing at Zainab on Melrose.
Who should wear it: Chanel Iman when she's off duty.
